Lumbar Spine Surgeries

Description

Lower back pain and lumbar spine disorders are among the most frequent causes of disability and reduced quality of life worldwide, often prompting patients to seek specialist neurosurgical evaluation. The lumbar spine bears most of the body’s weight and is therefore highly susceptible to degenerative changes, injury, and disc-related problems. While many cases can initially be managed with non-surgical treatments such as medications, physiotherapy, guided exercise programs, weight management, and epidural steroid injections, surgery may become necessary when symptoms persist or neurological deficits begin to progress.

Dr. Agrawal has extensive experience in managing a wide spectrum of lumbar spine conditions and performing advanced spinal surgeries aimed at relieving pain, decompressing neural structures, and restoring functional mobility. His surgical practice includes procedures such as decompression surgeries, microdiscectomy (discectomy), and laminectomy, which are commonly indicated for conditions like herniated or slipped discs, lumbar spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and chronic nerve root compression.

In conditions such as a slipped disc, the soft inner portion of an intervertebral disc protrudes and presses against nearby spinal nerves, often causing sharp back pain radiating into the legs (sciatica), along with tingling, numbness, or weakness. A discectomy or microdiscectomy is performed to carefully remove the herniated fragment while preserving as much of the normal disc structure as possible, thereby relieving nerve pressure and improving symptoms. This procedure is often preferred due to its minimally invasive nature and quicker recovery time.

Spinal stenosis, another common condition especially in older adults, involves narrowing of the spinal canal due to age-related changes such as bone overgrowth, thickened ligaments, or disc bulging. In such cases, a laminectomy may be recommended. This involves removing a portion of the vertebral bone (lamina) to create more space within the spinal canal, thereby reducing compression on the spinal cord and nerves. In some cases, additional stabilization procedures may be required if spinal instability is present.

Decompression surgeries, more broadly, are designed to relieve pressure on nerve roots or the spinal cord caused by structural abnormalities. These procedures can be performed using traditional open techniques or minimally invasive approaches depending on the patient’s condition, anatomy, and overall health status. Minimally invasive spine surgery, when appropriate, can offer benefits such as smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, and faster return to daily activities.

Each patient is thoroughly evaluated before surgery using detailed clinical examination and imaging studies such as MRI and CT scans. Dr. Agrawal emphasizes a careful diagnostic approach to ensure that surgery is only recommended when truly necessary and that the chosen procedure aligns with the underlying pathology. Factors such as age, bone quality, lifestyle requirements, occupational demands, and severity of neurological symptoms are all taken into account while designing a treatment plan.

Postoperative care is a crucial component of recovery and long-term success. Patients are typically guided through a structured rehabilitation program that may include physiotherapy, gradual mobility exercises, posture correction training, and core strengthening routines. This helps in restoring spinal stability, preventing recurrence of symptoms, and improving overall functional outcomes.

The overall objective of lumbar spine surgery is not only to relieve pain but also to restore nerve function, improve mobility, and enable patients to return to their normal activities with improved comfort and confidence.
